Letter from Paula Quilter wife of Jeff Quilter (Cobb Fire)

Good Morning,

WE are home now.  Just wanted to let you guys know.  He is doing well.  Glad to have him home and he is soooo glad to be home.  Getting out of the hospital was what he needed to start motivating him to get better.

For those of you who don't know, we were concerned he was getting depressed.  When we moved to the room, he became motivated to get up and walk and started eating better.  The days in ICU were hard for him.  He wouldn't talk to us, not even the doctor. He was very sick at his stomach and his eyes were swollen shut but only for a 24-36 hour period. But when we moved to the 4th floor he became more responsive.  As the hours wore on in the regular room though,, he became less.

He became very irritated and only mumbled.  The MD, PA and I talked and I then understood this was very common.  We don't think he has any personality changes other than what the medication is doing to him.  We just felt like it was mostly the environment.  We knew he would feel better being at home.  His normal home medications were started and he responded well.  We rollercoastered with his sodium levels however.  But, the last blood tests showed he was close to normal range and it would be safe to send him home with supervision.

He is eating now with less nausea and is able to walk to the bathroom now.  The days events include a shower which he is looking forward to.  His incision looks great.  I will be making an appointment with the MD within the next week (I think).  The staples don't come out for another week or so.

He doesn't really want to talk on the phone, but you can call me anytime.   He is doing well with small amount of visitors.  It depends on his sleepiness really.  Diet is restricted cause you know he had some issues in ICU with sugar levels, HBP, and sodium.  But we are monitoring everything he takes in and----puts out, LOL:).  Balance is good and hearing is good.  Smell is slightly off right now, but may come back.

I am very excited about his prognosis; things are going very well.  I think he is going to be just fine.  It is just a matter of time.  And like the surgeon told us, this is not a marathon.

Once again, thanks for all the support.  Cards, calls, etc have been greatly appreciated and as the days go by he asks me about all of you.  He knows you are there and tries to remember the things I have told him.

Love to you all.  Thanks from the bottom of my heart.  You do not know what your friendship means to us.  For me, it was great to have the support and strength you gave me.

God bless,

Paula
